What to Say When
What to say when you call the bank about a problem
Calls to customer care can feel stressful, especially when money is involved. Keep three things ready before you dial: what happened, when it happened and the amount. Short, clear sentences get you faster help.
Five phrases you can use
“Hello, I'm calling about a transaction I don't recognise.”
Give the reason for your call in the first sentence, so the agent can help you faster.
“On 12 September, ₹4,500 was debited from my account twice.”
Give the facts in one line: the date, the amount and what went wrong.
“Sorry, could you repeat that a little more slowly?”
It is perfectly normal to ask. Getting the details right matters more than speed.
“What is the next step, and how long will it take?”
Always end the call knowing what happens next.
“Could I have a reference number for this call, please?”
Write it down. If you need to call again, you won't have to explain everything from the start.
Small changes that sound better
“My money is gone. What is this?”
“₹4,500 was debited twice, and I'd like the second debit reversed.”
“Please do the needful.”
“Could you please reverse the second debit?”
Say exactly what you want the agent to do.
“Hello? Hello? Are you there?”
“Sorry, I can't hear anything. Are you still there?”
Good to know
Your bank will never ask for your OTP, PIN, CVV or full card number on a call. If anyone does, end the call and contact the bank using the number on the back of your card or on its official website.
Hear it in a conversation
You call your bank because a bill payment was taken twice.
Good afternoon, thank you for calling. How may I help you?
Hello. I'm calling about a payment that was debited twice from my savings account.
I'm sorry to hear that. Could you tell me the date and the amount?
Yes. On 12 September, ₹4,500 was debited twice for the same electricity bill.
Thank you. I can see both debits. I'll raise a request to reverse the second one.
Thank you. What is the next step, and how long will it take?
The amount should be credited back within seven working days.
Could I have a reference number for this call, please?
Of course. It's SR 48213.
Thank you for your help.
Your turn
Before your next customer care call, write one sentence with the date, the amount and the problem. Say it out loud twice before you dial.
